Charleston's colorful past began in 1663 when, shortly after King Charles of England was restored to the throne, his Majesty granted the chartered Carolina territory to his loyal friends. Known as the Lords Proprietors, these men spent seven years preparing for the establishment of Charles Towne, a tract of land across the Ashley River from the city's current location. Colonists quickly recognized the advantages of relocating onto the nearby peninsula, located at the junction of the Ashley and the Cooper Rivers. It was on this peninsula where the untamed port city of Charles Towne became what is today: the city of Charleston.
